A network proxy is a middleman that is a bridge between a local (such as devices inside a company or building) and the internet network. It can provide an additional layer of security, privacy and performance enhancement when connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
You can configure a proxy on Windows 10 either manually or using the Settings app. If you’re using the Settings app, select Proxy under Network & Internet. If the Use a proxy server switch is turned disabled, then skip this step. If not, you can turn it on and then fill in the proxy server’s address and port details.
If you use a proxy in a work or school setting it is possible that you will be prompted by the IT administrator to make use of a Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol (WPAD) script for automatic configuration. This method is more reliable than a manual configuration.
You should also disable any third-party software which could be interfering with your connection to the internet or modifying your settings. This includes antivirus, firewall and VPN applications. This is particularly helpful when the error message that you receive states that “Windows could not automatically detect the proxy settings of this network.”
If all else fails it is possible to perform a system reset. This will eliminate all drivers and programs that were installed prior to the restore point was created, allowing you to restore the default settings of your system. This should solve the issue and allow you to connect to the internet without encountering the error message.
